 In Hip City/Tony Adamo

where rhythms collide, and no jive is spoken/
Guru laid down the truth, a fusion of jazz and rap/ no holds barred streetwise rap talk/ Just as Herbie’s touch on keys/ his Headhunters laid down their stretching rhythm with Mike Clark, drums, and Paul Jackson bass, (God Made Me Funky)
echoing all over the streets/
Digable Planets breathed life
into conversations, with their subgenres into rap, jazz and hip hop
The DP’s spoken word rap jazz hit the airwaves with their debut album (A New Refutation of Time and Space)
Brooklyn NY was the Digable Planets home base in 1993/
Donald Byrd’s trumpet bustin out/while the Black Birds jazz funk blows your mind/ Groove Collective stirred the soul pot with afro-pop/ Latin jazz funk/and old skool hip hop/
while Jazzhole’s sick sound wrapped us in rapid-fire rap jazz a lot dialogue
of funky bass lines and drum machine hot grooves/
Drums beat, turning our feet to the dance floor/
turntables double scratchin’ in time/
congas and the horn section called out with their sweaty beat/
we jammed under urban lights/ and held each other tight/
where the echoes of legends lingered/ into the night air/
Miles, Wynton, Diz, Trane, and the Bird/ their spirit souls
and massive tones bustin’ out a thousand-fold/
we are the new jazz of today/ with new sounds and a new way to play and listen to what’s being said in our life and political systems/ Ya dig?

 Jazz on a Billboard/Tony Adamo

a flash of notes,
Urgent beats, syncopation, improvisation,
and impromptu solos but why jazz on a billboard?
What’s the hap’s on that?
Man, what is the impact of the word jazz on a billboard anyway?
Syncopation is alive,
solos breaking free,
and a temporary show,
but is jazz here to stay?
Does a billboard for Jazz tell us about all the arranging, playing, composing
finding a paying gig, radio spins, music reviews,
band members quitting to get out of the jazz life?
Cars whiz by, faces turned,
who cares about the sound of jazz anyway
The tenor horn says
"Listen up, Listen here
Jazz is everywhere,
and like nowhere to be found
So, dig this
Every jazz note,
every gig, every miss,
and every jazz player who lives jazz behind
Jazz shapes your life with a heartbreaking rhythm.
So, here’s to the journey,
to hip beats and downbeats
Jazz is life on a billboard,
is hip for some passers-by to see
to feel, to groove, to feel where you're at
To come alive, jazz is for real
and that's my dance in life

WAS IT U?
Under the stars, were Jelly roll Morton rolls, carnival lights twinkling,
like flowers glowing brightly in the night.

Candy-bright sugar moments,
pop like gumdrops,
a sweet melody we all know.

Graffiti dreams paint the walls,
hip-hop rhythms,
jumping over a yellow moon,

Chet Baker's notes float,
alive in the air,
the Hammond B-3 sings its soul,

freestyle, free heart, diggin' to write a jazz chart,
we dance until dawn,
lost in the Latin rhythms of last night.

Spoken Word Poetry: Backbone Slim’s Blues/Tony Adamo
12/10/2024

In the deep south, where rivers wind, A tale unfolds, of a soul inter-twined/
Backbone Slim, born where the cotton sways, In fields of labor, he spent his days/
Weary hands, skin kissed by the sun/ Back-breaking work, but he never would run/
Close to the soil, where his roots dig deep, A rhythm of struggle, a song to keep/
Voices holler, chanting through the air, From the cotton fields yonder, a story laid bare/
The gins were a symphony, grinding away/ Blues notes forming, In Slims younger day/
His early life was painted in pain, sorrow, disgust/
Lookin’ for freedom, in a world full of rust/
“Man, I gotta get out,” he whispered to the night/ Who can I trust in this endless fight? /
NOLA called out the soul in his blues/ A blues sanctuary where his heart could choose/
Man, give me a big holler, give me a shout, In the blues rhythm of life, let the music pour out/
So, dig, the blues is his canvas, his solace, his strife/ He’s hip to It/
It's not everyone’s life/
The Smoky Bars/Delta deep Juke Joints/No Bandstand Brother/Just Play in the Club Back Corner/
Slim will Play till he drops, it’s the pulse that beats in his life/
In every strum, in every blues vamp's embrace/
Backbone Slim finds his rightful place/
His 12-bar blues, a shot of hard gin/
Warm on the tongue, where the journey begins/
From the cotton fields' labor to his heart's sweet bluesy refrain/
Backbone Slim’s legacy is a testament to pain and gain/
So, listen closely, and get hip to the blues story, In the deep south, where the blues is gold/
For in every blues heartbreak, and every cryin' soulful tune, Backbone Slim sings to the rhythm of the bright full moon/
So, jump aboard his blues train and feel his song roll by/
